What a Tuscany wine tour costs

Wine tours from Florence fall into a few types. The figures are starting prices for one adult; the price for your date is on the booking page.

The full day with hill towns is mainly a sightseeing day with one winery on it, so it visits fewer wineries than most half-day coach tours. If wine is the reason you are going, the small-group half-day gives you two estates in four and a half hours for $100. What more money gets you

Paying more mostly changes who you share the day with and whether lunch is included. The real difference between the $60 and $100 tours is usually the size of the group, not the number of wineries.

• Around $50 to $65: a coach and two wineries. A coach from Florence, a few wines at each winery and bread, olive oil and salami alongside. The Chianti Tour with Two Wine and Food Tastings visits two organic wineries for $64.
• Around $95 to $110: a smaller group, or lunch. A minibus or minivan in place of a coach, or a three-course lunch. The minivan day to San Gimignano, from $96, adds free time in the town.
• Around $145 to $250: a full day with lunch in a small group. One to three wineries, a long lunch and often a village stop. The Tuscany Wine Tasting Safari costs least, from $146, in a 4WD with lunch or dinner.
• Above $250: a private day or Brunello country. Private days from Florence are $280 per person and up, and the small-group Val d'Orcia day to Montalcino and Montepulciano starts at $253.

Between about $60 and $65 you are choosing an operator and a meeting point. Three of the coach tours share an inclusion list that is almost word for word the same, and all three meet at Villa Costanza, the coach station in Scandicci on the edge of Florence. You reach it by tram, and the tram ticket isn't included.

Tours that offer less for the price

The three-winery lunch tour from $224, rated 4.8/5 from 47 reviews, costs $56 more than our full-day pick for a similar day. The Chianti dinner tour, from $123, is rated 4.2/5 from 258 reviews, the lowest rating in the table.

Other ways to see wine country

Most wine tours leave from Florence, but you don't have to start there. If you are staying in Siena, the Chianti half-day from Siena takes you to two wine estates and Castellina in Chianti for $55, and you skip the drive back to Florence. From Pisa or Lucca, a four-hour trip to a Chianti winery by minivan is $94. From Rome, the Montepulciano day with lunch and wines is from $111, but it is an eleven- to twelve-hour day.

The costs that aren't in the ticket price

A guided tour price covers the transport, the guide and the tastings. The gaps to plan for:

• Lunch on half-day tours. The half-day coach tours serve snacks with the tastings, not a meal. Eat before you go, or plan lunch back in Florence.
• Tips. Listed as not included on most tours here. Tipping isn't obligatory in Italy, but a small tip for a guide who has made the day is welcome.
• Bottles. Estates sell at the cellar door, and it is the cost people most often forget. Decide your limit before the tastings start.
• Shipping wine home. Some estates ship abroad. Ask what it costs before you order a case.
• Getting to the meeting point. Most tours start from a meeting point in Florence, private days included. If yours leaves from Villa Costanza, allow time and a tram ticket to get there.

Is it worth paying more?

For most people, the extra money is best spent on a smaller group or on lunch, and either costs about $40 more than a coach tour. A small-group full day makes sense if you want a long lunch and a village stop and don't mind being out until late afternoon.
